This is definitely one of the darker ones I’ve seen. Then again, this was long before mass shootings were a thing.

Going postal was a thing, I don’t know exactly when that strip was written, but probably after that.

True, but it seems like everything changed after Columbine. At least “going postal” wasn’t necessarily a random thing done by sociopaths who were trying to get attention.

I don’t see it as that dark. Just a commentary on hunting, and our rationalization for it. I mean, the deer are just going about their (possible boring) day, looking for food or water, when the shot fires.

You’re right, but I guess it has taken on more baggage in our age of mass workplace/school shootings. I have to wonder if Watterson would draw the same cartoon today.

That’s a good question. Probably not.

While that’s true, humans have also eliminated the traditional apex predators... humans. And the lesser predators. Death by skilled hunter is also far more humane than death by natural causes; getting eaten to death, starving to death, or getting sick and dying of exposure. Just like free-range cattle are critical to the health of natural grasslands traditionally grazed by bison, which we eliminated. It's all about balance.

I’m young enough that I don’t remember any instances prior to Columbine, but old enough to remember movies where “going postal” was used as a punchline. But you’re right that it probably wouldn’t have been drawn today.

Like I said about my kids, they never learned to walk. They learned to run. Now that they’re teenagers, though, it’s a different story.
